A thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of the thyroid gland. It is commonly performed to treat thyroid cancer, large goiters, or hyperthyroidism that does not respond to medication. The procedure may be total (entire gland removal) or partial (removal of one lobe). Patients may require lifelong thyroid hormone replacement therapy post-surgery.
