Total Laryngectomy

A total laryngectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the entire larynx (voice box) due to laryngeal cancer. The surgeon creates a permanent opening in the neck (stoma) for breathing. Patients lose their natural voice and may require speech rehabilitation using an electrolarynx or esophageal speech techniques. Post-surgery, they may also undergo radiation or chemotherapy.
